There is nothing more adventurous than a road trip especially if its one through Rajasthan. As the flight descended on the arid lands of the Pink city, I was welcomed by some hospitable folks who had arranged a car for one of the most amazing road trips I was ever about to have.
The Pink city lived up to its name – “Bloody Pink” as one of my friends mentioned. Rattled with the history which Jaipur is so well known for, the legends still breathe and the ghosts of the past reach out to you as you walk past the corridors of the City Palace, Hawa Mahal and the colourful markets of the Johri Bazaar. The forts loom large on the outskirts of the old city. One can still imagine the elephants, horses adorned for official parades of the Maharajas. Opulence greets you at almost every sight. Colors of life bathe this city which is buzzing with traders, merchants and hawkers. There was a sense of festivity in the air. It was Diwali after all.
The principal tourist attraction is the Amer Fort built by Raja Man Singh. Built in aesthetic style, it is known for its huge ramparts, gates and opulent palace complex built with red sandstone and marble. Truly fit for a king, its asthetic ambience is celebrated by the Sheesh Mahal, Diwan–e-aam, Diwan–e-Khas and the temple of the Sila Devi Goddess who is said to have visited the king in his dreams. This palace, along with the Jaigarh and Nahargarh forts, is situated on the same stretch of the Aravalli range of hills.
We hit the highway in the wee hours of the morning. Skirted by arid lands, shrubs and bushes, and rolled into the ghats of Pushkar.
The hint of winter was in the air, as we reached the city of our dreams – Udaipur, the lake city, and the most romantic place on earth – The Taj Lake Palace hotel!
The chronicles of Rajasthan will continue….keep following to know more about the Mewar Rajputs and their brilliant lifestyle… and of course my experiences in this mesmerising city!
