Palolem Beach in Goa – a perfect holiday destination!
For the third time in a row, I am here to feel the waves at Palolem beach– South Goa. The sparkling blue ocean, golden sands, eternal blue skies and the leaning palms swaying in the sea breeze make it a perfect recipe for a holiday on the beach. No, this is not some fancy resort, but a string of beach huts lining the shore on Palolem beach. My favourite haunt here is at Ciarans- a group of rustic, yet premium beach huts. Made from eco-friendly coir, the beach huts surround a little garden. The floors are wooden and the windows covered by long linen curtains. The huts lead to the restaurant and bar, overlooking the sea. It is multi cuisine in nature with flavour’s of Continental, Goan, and Italian. Some of the best cocktails can be enjoyed at the bar, my favourite being the “White Russian”. Tranquil and serene, this beach can take your breath way as you sit in the restaurant soaking in the sea breeze and hearing the relentless sound of the waves, while tucking in a bowl of fresh tropical fruits and yogurt. The breakfast buffet is complimentary and so is the evening tea and cake.
You can check out the barbecue for some of the best-grilled seafood. Succulent Tiger prawns, the lip-smacking Red Snapper or the juicy Calamari are some of the hot favourites of the tourists. Well, I can’t resist the simple, yet delicious Goan fish curry with steamed rice. Also the lovely dessert I discovered here – Rum bananas with mint flavoured vanilla ice cream. With eco-friendly huts, warm staff – ever ready to attend to your services, and delicious food, Ciarans speaks of character, warmth and hospitality. The majority of the tourists are from Russia, Britain and other parts of Europe. Find them under the beach umbrellas soaking up the sun after a luxurious application of sun tan lotion. Other activities include canoeing, dolphin sighting, swimming, surfing and fishing but nothing beats the good old morning jog on the wet sands. Its paradise in every language. The beach house boasts of an open-air library too, stocked up with novels, magazines and books in most European languages and Russian. It also has a spa with some rejuvenating massages on board. I found them a tad pricy, but then, you are on vacation!
I got a long invigorating massage listening to the waves – sheer bliss I say! Few words on safety… the beach is safe and secure. Coast guards drive by ensuring the safety of the beach during the day. Make sure you carry your ID at all times. Most of the beach huts do not accept cards. The nearest ATM is about 3 kms way. So it’s not really a worry. The neighboring flea market is a colorful feast for the eyes. From quirky knick-knacks to leather goods, clothes and jewelry it’s a refreshing atmosphere of artistic work and creative design.
As evening sets in and the twilight skies cover the coast, the staff put forth their innovation and creativity in setting up candle lit sit outs on the beach. Be it Chinese lanterns, decorative bean bags or candle-lit holes dug in the sand, every shack puts its best foot forward in attracting its customers. The beach is modified with innovative effort and style. What results is a be-jeweled coastline thumping to the musical beats, which fill the salty air. The party begins, and goes on way into the starlit night.
